Saints Varsity Baseball is a highly competitive program offering three levels of participation (Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshman). The varsity teams have won 22 League Titles, 11 Lion’s Tournament Championships, 10 Bill Whittaker Classic Tournament Championships, 3 City Conference Tournament Championships, have been to the C.I.F. Championship game 5 times, And The California State Regional Playoffs 1 time (2025). The tradition is rich in Saints Baseball and the program will continue to produce fundamentally sound baseball players who continue their playing careers at the next level.
Head coach Craig da Luz has been at the helm of the program for the past 17 years. da Luz was appointed the head coach in 2009. Coach da Luz’s teams have averaged 20 wins a season (2009-present: 324-190-5) and captured league titles in 2024, 2021, 2013, 2012, and 2011 and 2nd place finishes in 2018, 2015, 2014, 2010 and 2009. In 2014 Coach da Luz was selected as the Diamond Sports American Baseball Coaches Association Regional Coach of the Year and a finalist for the National Coach of the Year. In 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 the Saints Varsity team was awarded an ABCA Team Academic Excellence Award.
The 2025 season saw a veteran team (17 seniors) compete at a very high level all year long. The Saints were one of eight teams that earned a coveted slot in the CIF Open Division Baseball Playoffs.
We opened our season playing in the inaugural Perfect Game SoCal Showdown that pitted some of the top teams, not only in California but the nation, against each other. Our journey ultimately fell short of our goal of a CIF championship but we did enough throughout the season and in the Open Division playoffs to qualify for our first ever California State Regional Playoff birth. We ultimately lost a hard fought battle to the #1 ranked team in California and #2 in the Nation, St. John Bosco (Bellflower, CA) 1-2 in the California State Regional quarter finals. The state playoff experience should help pave the way for continued program success.
We graduated 10 players that are now playing professionally or collegiately from the class of 2025 – Grayson Boles – Kansas City Royals, Shane Miranda – University of Notre Dame, Tyler Wick – University of Oregon, Raphael Dunne – UCSD, Jonah De Perro – Lewis & Clark College, Chris Black – Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Kapono Nakanelua – Regis University, Drake Konja – Grossmont College, Anthony Tompkins – SD Mesa College, and Cristian Mares – Orange Coast College.
Mike Stephenson Diamond at Bill Whittaker Field is not only the home for Saints Baseball but also the recipient of the 2023 National High School Baseball Coaches Association (NHSBCA)/TURFACE Region 8 (CA, HI, AK, OR, WA) Field of the Year and a Finalist for National Field of the Year.
The 2026 Schedule is highlighted once again by a difficult Western League schedule, as well as tournament play in the 2nd Annual Perfect Game SoCal Showdown pitting some of the top teams in the nation against each other, the 76th Annual SD Lions Baseball Tournament Open Division, and the Bill Dickens Grossmont-Metro-City Conferences (GMC) Tournament. As as program we strive for a high rate of achievement in the classroom and on the field as we head into the 2026 baseball season.
Every year the program goals are to play to the best of our ability, with very high expectations of self and team, play with class and dignity, win a league title and the CIF and State Championship.
