After a CIF victory in football, basketball season is in full swing with the postseason on the horizon. Sporting a 21-6 record, 10-1 in league, Saints basketball team has an
optimistic outlook for the end of the season, and senior Daniel Caya agrees that the future of basketball at St. Augustine is bright, with playoffs well within reach.
“Taeshon Cherry, one of our youngest players, has a great work ethic and ability,” Caya said. “He will keep the team going during playoffs and in future seasons. And chances for playoffs are very high, especially since Coach Haupt motivates us to play our best. Overall, our season is going great.”
Saints student section, The Pit, has also been key this season for all sports, including basketball.
“The Pit keeps the basketball team fired up, especially during tough matchups against teams like Lincoln,” Caya said. “Everyone in the pit gets us pumped up and gets in the head of the opposing team.”
As the season closes in on playoffs, The Pit is expected to be more energetic than ever.
“I love taking part in The Pit. It always delivers a great atmosphere,” senior Andrew Quinn said. “I am really looking forward to these upcoming playoffs games, and I can’t wait for the unveiling of the new banner at the next rally.”
Caya is not the only person that is looking forward to the rest of the season. Coach Haupt has expressed optimism for Saints in the coming matchups.
“We’re having a great year, and this is one of the best teams I’ve ever coached,” Coach Haupt said. “We’re excited as we’re on our way to winning our back to back league titles. We’re going to make a great push in the playoffs.”
It’s clear to players and fans alike that Saints Basketball is on their way to a great finish. Saintsmen are counting on them to bring another banner to the gym.
The first playoff game is tonight at San Marcos High School at 7 P.M.
